CABROL, FERNAND. — Benedictine monk, scholar and promoter of liturgical science, born in Marseille on 11 December 1855, died at Farnborough on 4 June 1937. Having entered the abbey of Solesmes, he was ordained a priest there on 3 June 1882 and became its prior in 1890. In 1895 he moved to the recently founded monastery of St. Michael at Farnborough (England), which he governed as prior until 1902 and as its first abbot from 1903 until his death.
A member of academies and learned societies, he wrote numerous articles for various periodicals to elucidate the different forms of the liturgy, especially the Roman and Gallican. His literary reputation was consolidated by the Bibliographie des Bénédiction de la Congrégation de France (Solesmes 1889), followed by the Histoire du cardinal Pitra. He helped collect a great deal of archaeological and liturgical material for the Dictionnaire d'archéologie chrétienne et de liturgie, begun in 1903, which, like the Monumenta Ecclesiae Liturgica in 4 vols., he published in collaboration with other scholars, Leclercq (v.).
