CABROL, FERNAND. - Benedictine monk, scholar and promoter of liturgical science, b. in Marseille on 11 Dec. 1855, d. at Farnborough on 4 June 1937. Having entered the abbey of Solesmes, he was ordained a priest there on 3 June 1882 and was its prior from 1890. In 1895 he moved to the recently founded monastery of St. Michael at Farnborough (England), which he governed until 1902 as prior, and as first abbot from 1903 until his death.
A member of academies and scholarly societies, he wrote numerous articles in various periodicals to illustrate the different forms of the liturgy, especially the Roman and the Gallican. His literary fame was consolidated with the Bibliographie des Bénédiction de la Congrégation de France (Solesmes 1889), followed by the Histoire du cardinal Pitra. He helped to gather much archaeological and liturgical material in the Dictionnaire d'archéologie chrétienne et de liturgie, in progress since 1903, which, like the Monumenta Ecclesiae Liturgica in 4 vols., he published in collaboration with other scholars, first of all Leclercq (v.). Among his other works mention should be made of: Etude sur la Peregrinatio Silviae; Les Eglises de Jérusalem; La discipline et la liturgie au IVe siècle (1895); Le livre de la prière antique (1900), perhaps the finest and most suitable book for spreading the liturgical spirit; La prière liturgique (1901-1902); Les origines liturgiques (1906); Introduction aux études liturgiques (1906); L'Angleterre chrétienne avant les Normands (1909); La prière pour la France (1916); Mon Missel (1927); La Messe (1927); La prière des premiers chrétiens (1929); Les livres de la Liturgie latine (1930); La Messe en Occident (1932); St. Benoît (1933), and a posthumous work: The year's liturgy (London 1938).
