Callistus III, Antipope redirects here.

JOHN, Abbot of Strumí. - Died on Sept. 20, 1168, the imperial antipope Paschal III, during the struggle between Frederick Barbarossa and Alexander III, from German circles the continuation of the scheme was desired and the abbot G. of S. was appointed, who took the name Callisto III.

Immediately afterward, the Emperor carried out his fifth descent into Italy. There followed the victory of the Lombard League at Legnano and the peace of Venice (1177). The antipope, who had led a wretched life with his small court, without being anything more than a pawn in Barbarossa's game, was declared deposed there; he tried to resist, but the same imperial arms turned against him and, besieged in Viterbo by Christian of Mainz, he was forced to submit publicly to Alexander at Tusculum, toward the end of Aug. 1178. He owed it to the Pontiff's kindness to be able to end his life as governor at Benevento.
