CARACCIOLO, LANDOLFO. - Franciscan theologian, b. in Naples toward the end of the 13th century, d. at Amalfi in 1351. For several years he held the office of justiciar and perhaps taught in the "studium" of his native city. He was a disciple of John Duns Scotus at the University of Paris and, in all likelihood, taught theology there. Having returned to Italy, he held the governance of his religious province. In 1326 he was elected bishop of Castellammare di Stabia and in 1330 was transferred to the archiepiscopal see of Amalfi. He was also a prolific and effective orator.

Highly esteemed at the Angevin court, he held high and delicate offices. In theology he was a follower, though not a slavish one, of his master Duns Scotus.

He wrote a commentary on the four books of the Sentences of Peter Lombard and other minor works, which remained unpublished, with the exception of the Commentary on the Second Book of the Sentences and a Moral Commentary on the Gospels (Naples 1637).
