CARACCIOLO, LANDOLFO. - Franciscan theologian, born in Naples toward the end of the 13th century, died at Amalfi in 1351. For several years he held the office of justiciar and perhaps taught in the «studium» of his native city. He was a disciple of Giovanni Duns Scoto at the University of Paris and, in all probability, taught theology there. Having returned to Italy, he governed his religious province. In 1326 he was elected bishop of Castellammare di Stabia and in 1330 transferred to the archiepiscopal see of Amalfi. He was also a prolific and effective preacher.
Highly esteemed at the Angevin court, he held important and delicate offices. In theology he was a follower, though not a slavish one, of his master Duns Scoto.
He wrote a commentary on the four books of the Sentences of Pietro Lombardo and other minor works, which remained unpublished, with the exception of the Commento al secondo libro delle Sentenze and a Commento morale sui Vangeli (Naples 1637).
