CASTRO, RODRIGO de. - Cardinal, b. at Valladolid in 1523 from the noble C. family of the branch of the counts of Lemos (or Lemus), d. at Seville in 1600. He studied at the University of Salamanca, and in 1559 entered the Spanish Inquisition. In Jan. 1565 he went to Rome, sent by Philip II, to obtain from Pope Pius V that the sentence in the trial of the archbishop of Toledo B. Carranza (v.) be devolved to the Spanish Inquisition as well; he obtained only, however, that a legate be sent to Spain (Ugo Boncompagni, later Pope Gregory XIII). He was afterward bishop of Zamora and Cuenca, and then archbishop of Seville, where in 1586 he convoked a diocesan synod. On the proposal of Philip II he was named on 12 Dec. 1583 cardinal of the title of the SS. Apostoli. He was praised by his contemporaries for his virtue and for his magnificence. He founded the college of Monforte di Lemus (1594), which he entrusted to the Jesuits.
