CLARE MARY OF THE PASSION, Venerable. - Discalced Carmelite mystic, Princess Giovanna Vittoria Colonna-Barberini, b. 11 April 1610 in Orsogna (Chieti) to Don Filippo Colonna, Duke of Paliano, d. in Rome on 22 Aug. 1675.

Educated with the Augustinian nuns of Naples, after a period of laxity in which she gave herself over to vanities and amusements, she returned to God and was favored with heavenly visions. She entered among the Carmelites of the very poor monastery of S. Egidio in Rome on 4 Oct. 1628. She led a life of the utmost austerity; purified by God through interior sufferings and temptations, and enriched with extraordinary gifts, she attained the mystical espousal; in 1645 she founded in Rome the monastery of Discalced Carmelites of "Regina Coeli," where she died in holiness. Shortly after her death the process of beatification was introduced, and her virtues were recognized as heroic by the Church on 22 Aug. 1762.
