EMPOLI, JACOPO CHIMENTI detto l'. - Painter b. at Empoli ca. 1554, d. at Florence on 30 Sept. 1640, a pupil of Maso di S. Friano, a mannerist in the orbit of Cecchino Salviati; E. remained faithful to the precepts of Pontormo and, more so, of Andrea del Sarto.

Active above all in Florence, Pistoia and Empoli itself, the painter developed a noble style of his own, characteristic for the monumentality of compositions of a somewhat old-fashioned stamp, which he nevertheless tempered with careful observations from life. Thus in the St. Charles Borromeo and the Respigliosi Family, in S. Domenico at Pistoia, and in the Incredulity of St. Thomas in the collegiate church of Empoli, in the Susanna at the Bath of the Hofmuseum in Vienna, in the Supper at Emmaus of the Schiff Giorgini collection in Rome.
