CIAMPOLI, GIOVANNI. - Scholar and man of letters, b. in Florence in 1589, d. in Iesi on 8 Sept. 1643. He began his studies with the Jesuits and the Dominicans. Under the patronage of G. B. Strozzi he was introduced to the court of Grand Duke Ferdinand, and was sent to complete his studies at Padua and Pisa, where he took his doctorate. Having come to Rome and taken up the ecclesiastical habit, he was favorably received at the pontifical court.
Appointed secretary of the Briefs by Gregory XV, he was confirmed in the office by the new pontiff Urban VIII, under whom he also enjoyed a canonry at St. Peter's. Having fallen into disfavor, in 1632 he was removed from Rome and sent as governor successively to Montalto, Norcia, S. Severino, Fabriano, Iesi (cf. his Lettere, [Venice 1661], passim).
He enjoyed wide renown in his time both for the activity he displayed at the pontifical court and for his work as a man of letters. A friend and supporter of Galileo, he was anti-Aristotelian; he set out his own ideas in the Filosofia naturale. As a poet, in his Rime (Rome 1648) he sought to give poetry a moral-religious content, in opposition to the production of his time.
