CONSOBRINO (SOBRINHO), João. - Carmelite theologian, b. in Lisbon at the beginning of the 15th century, d. there on 11 January 1486 (not in 1475, as others have supposed). After completing his studies at the University of Oxford and obtaining a doctorate in theology and canon law (2 July 1449), he acquired the title of magister maximus for his extraordinary learning.
Upon his return to his homeland, he became a preacher and advisor to King Alfonso V of Portugal, as well as an inquisitor. Later elected superior of the Portuguese province (1479), he governed it until his death, which occurred by poison administered by Jews. He left an excellent treatise: *De iustitia commutativa et anatia capnastoria ac aelarum ludo* (Paris 1496); and some other theological works.
