DAMASCENE THE STUDITE. - Greek preacher of the 16th century, b. at Thessalonica in an unknown year, d. in 1577. He was exarch in Little Russia under Metrophanes, patriarch of Constantinople (1565-72), bishop of Lita and Rendina, finally metropolitan of Naupactus and Arta, where he died (cf. E. Legrand, Bibliographie hellénique des XVᵉ et XVIᵉ siècles, IV, Paris 1906, p. 165).

His principal work is a collection of 36 sermons, mostly ascetic, published for the first time in 1568, under the title: Βιβλίον καλοῦμενον θησαυρός, and reprinted several times thereafter down to our own day, being one of the books of spiritual reading of the modern Greeks. In the third sermon he enumerates the seven Sacraments, but gives the monastic habit as the sixth and forgets penance. However, in recent editions this has been substituted for the monastic habit. D. recognizes the status of Sacrament only for first marriages.
