DAVID OF AUGSBURG. - German Franciscan, mystical writer and preacher, b. at Augsburg (Bavaria) ca. 1200, d. there on 15 or 19 Nov. 1272. Little is known about his life. For some years he was master of novices at Regensburg, where in 1246 he was charged with a visitation of two monasteries. Later he lived at Augsburg, writing and preaching to the people together with his disciple (?), the famous Berthold (v.) of Regensburg.
His writings are important, not all of them published, full of holy doctrine, sometimes attributed to St. Bernard or to St. Bonaventure. See, for example, 3 opuscules in Maxima Bibliotheca Veterum Patrum, XXV, Lyon 1677, pp. 867-939; De exterioris et interioris hominis compositione, Quaracchi 1899. A treatise against the Waldensians, which today some would attribute to St. Albert the Great (Zeitschrift für Kath. Theologie, 14 [1921], pp. 609-27). An unpublished Expositio Regulae O. F. M. has been studied by E. Lempp, in Zeitschrift für Kirchengeschichte, 19 (1898), pp. 345-359. He also wrote various mystical treatises in German.
