DAVIDE di AUGUSTA. - Franciscan, mystical writer and German preacher, b. at Augusta (Augsburg, Bavaria) c. 1200, d. there on 15 or 19 Nov. 1272. Little is known of his life. For some years he was master of novices at Ratisbona, where in 1246 he was charged with visiting two monasteries. Later he lived at Augusta, writing and preaching to the people together with his disciple (?), BERTOLDO, SANTO (v.) da Ratisbona.
Important are his writings, not all of them published, full of holy doctrine, sometimes attributed to St Bernard or St Bonaventura. See, for example, 3 opuscules in Maxima Bibliotheca Veterum Patrum, XXV, Lione 1677, pp. 867-939; De exterioris et interioris hominis compositione, Quaracchi 1899. A treatise against the Waldensians, which today some would attribute to St Alberto Magno (Zeitschrift für Kath. Theologie, 14 [1921], pp. 609-27). An unpublished Expositio Regulae O. F. M. was studied by E. Lempp, in Zeitschrift für Kirchengeschichte, 19 (1898), pp. 345-359. He also wrote various mystical treatises in German.
