DE NATALIBUS, PIETRO. - Hagiographer, born in Venezia, where he was parish priest of the SS. Apostoli until 1370, when he was appointed bishop of Esquilio (Iesolo, also called Cavazuccherina). The last information concerning him dates from 1400.
He wrote: Catalogus Sanctorum et eorum gestorum ex diversis et multis voluminibus collectus, begun in 1369, completed in 1372, published in Vicenza in 1493 and about ten times during the first half of the sixteenth century. Some editions, such as that of Lione 1542 (in-fol.), include additions concerning saints canonized after the author’s death (St. Bernardino da Siena, St. Bonaventura, etc.). It was also translated into French: Le grand catalogue des saints et saintes (Parigi 1523-24). The work, divided into 12 books, contains more than 1,500 notices, arranged according to the ecclesiastical calendar. In the prologue he lists his sources, among them Vincenzo di Beauvais, Giacomo da Varazze,
Pietro Calò. As a critic, the author still belongs wholly to the High Middle Ages and is of no greater value than Giacomo da Varazze.
