NEAPOLITANUS, Joannes de Regina de (John of Naples). - Dominican scholastic of the 13th-14th century. He obtained the licentiate in theology in Paris, where in 1310-11 he lectured on the Sentences (whose Commentaries have not been found). In 1313-14 he was a member of the commission for the examination of the works of Durandus of St. Porciano; from 1317 lector at the Dominican studium of Naples; in 1323 procurator in Avignon for the canonization of St. Thomas Aquinas.
He wrote, besides the commentaries, Quaestiones quodlibetales, and 42 Quaestiones disputatae (Naples 1618). Adhering to St. Thomas, he treated theological and philosophical subjects: the beatific vision, the temporal power of the popes, the questions concerning being, time and eternity, the soul, truth, free will and individuation, departing in this last subject from St. Thomas. He defended the Thomistic doctrine against Durandus and demonstrated that the condemnation of Stephen Tempier did not strike the sound thought of Thomas.
