ELIESEN (HELGESEN), PAOLO. — Danish theologian, born at Varberg (today Halland) around 1480, died in 1536, perhaps killed by the Lutherans. In 1517 he became a Carmelite in Helsingør; in 1519 he was prior in Copenhagen and professor of theology at that University, and in 1527 provincial. He was the last defender of Catholic doctrine against the Lutherans in the Nordic countries. In his writings (more than thirty), in Danish and Latin, published in Copenhagen (1932–48, 7 vols.), almost all apologetic in character, E. shows himself highly versed in Sacred Scripture, ecclesiastical history, and canon law, greatly surpassing his compatriots of his time.

Ambrogio di Santa Teresa ELIEZER ('Elī' ezer “my God is help”). — Name of ten Israelites mentioned in the Bible.
1. Abraham’s Damascene servant (Gen. 15, 2). E. is thought to be the “oldest servant of Abraham’s household, the steward of all his possessions” (Gen. 24, 2), faithful to him, whom Abraham sent to Mesopotamia to obtain a wife for his son Isaac (Gen. 24, 3–66). 2. Moses’ second son by Sephora (Ex. 18, 4; I Par. 23, 15). He remained with his grandfather Iethro until Moses returned from Egypt at the head of Israel (Ex. 18, 1–7). His descendants are described in I Par. 23, 17; 26, 25–27. 3. A Benjaminite (I Par. 7, 8). 4. One of the priests who, at the sound of the trumpets, accompanied the carrying of the ark from the house of Obededom to Jerusalem (I Par. 15, 24). 5. Head of the tribe of Ruben, in the time of David (I Par. 27, 16). 6. Jewish prophet, son of Dodau, from Maresa; he rebuked Iosaphat for his alliance with Ochozia (ca. 854 B.C.) to establish a fleet for trade with Ophir, predicting the failure of the undertaking (II Par. 20, 35–37). Iosaphat therefore refused to repeat the attempt, as Ochozia proposed (I Reg. 22, 50). 7. One of the Jewish leaders commissioned by Esdra to recruit Temple servants from a Jewish colony in Babylon (Eid. 8, 16–20). 8 and 9. A priest and a Levite who repudiated the foreign wives they had taken after returning from exile (Eid. 10, 18, 23). 10. Son of Herem, ancestor of Gesti (Eid. 10, 31; Lc. 3, 29).
