EMANUELE di GESÙ MARIA. - Discalced Carmelite theologian and preacher, in the world Michele d'Ambrogio, b. at Saponara-Villafranca (Messina) on 1 Nov. 1621, d. at Naples on 17 Sept. 1692.
An excellent orator, he preached to great acclaim in the major cities of Italy and at the court of Emperor Leopold I in Vienna. Cardinal Antonio Pignatelli called him «tuba Spiritus Sancti». He also held the highest offices in his Order: he was provincial of Naples and Sicily, general definitor three times, and general of the Order (1677–80).
He published the works: Frutti del Carmelo, discorsi morali (4 vols., Rome–Naples 1667–73); Myrrha, thus et aurum (Naples 1677); Le finezze dell'amore di Gesù (ibid. 1601 and 1713); Istoria panegirica di s. Gioachino (ibid. 1692); Fiori
