AENEAS OF PARIS. - Bishop and theologian, b. at the beginning of the 9th century, d. in Paris on 27 Dec. 870. Head of the Chancery of Charles the Bald, he distinguished himself by his industriousness and by the favor with which he handled ecclesiastical affairs ("fervor in divinis rebus": Epist. Guenilonis [inter epist. Lupi Ferrar.]; PL 119, 574).
On the death of Encarnado, the king presented E. as candidate for the see of Paris, whom the bishops of the province of Sens willingly accepted (856). As soon as he was elected he subscribed four chapters concerning predestination, over which the lively controversy provoked by Gottschalk of Orbais (v.) was then being waged. He took part in the numerous councils that on that occasion were held in the territory of Charles the Bald. In the name of the bishops of the province of Sens, who had been invited by Pope Nicholas I to refute the accusations of Photius, he wrote a treatise Adversus Graecos in 210 chapters (PL 121, 685-762). It is a simple compilation of patristic texts in defense of the Filioque, of the celibacy of priests, of the Roman primacy and of various Latin usages.
