EUPHRATES. - Bishop of Cologne. In 344 he was sent by the emperor Constans, together with Vincent, bishop of Capua, to Antioch to obtain from Constantius the return of St. Athanasius. During his stay in the city E. was the victim of a vile attack plotted against him by the bishop Stephen, who was deposed for this reason. The spurious acts of a council held at Cologne in 346 report that E. embraced the error of Photinus by asserting that Jesus Christ is a mere man; accused by his faithful, he was condemned and deposed by a synod of all the bishops of Gaul. This report is not reliable.
