DAUGHTERS OF THE HEART OF MARY (Paris). - After the suppression of the religious orders in France, the Jesuit Father Picot de la Clorivière in 1790 conceived the idea of forming a society of women who, without living in community and without wearing religious habits, would supply in some way for the suppressed congregations. The new Institute was called that of the "D. of the H. of M.," with the purpose of ceaselessly procuring its own sanctification through the sanctification and perfection of others. Some associates lived in community, others in their own homes.

The Institute spread in France, England and Italy, and, notwithstanding its character, the Holy See granted many approvals, first under Leo XII, 19 July 1825, by rescript of the Sacred Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, and then under Pius IX with a decree of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars of 29 April 1853. The constitutions were approved by Leo XIII on 8 June 1890.

They have at present 138 houses with 3799 members.
