GAMBERINI, ANTONIO DOMENICO. - Cardinal, b. at Imola on 31 Oct. 1760, d. at Rome on 25 Apr. 1841. He acquired a reputation as a profound jurist; and after having been study assistant to Msgr. Acciaiuoli Torriglioni, auditor of the Rota, he became civil assessor of the legation of Romagna (1814), auditor of the Rota for the legation and province of Ferrara (1818) and as such appointed ponens of the Congregation of Ecclesiastical Immunity (1822).
Secretary of the Congregation of the Council and of the Residence of Bishops from 1823, he received from Leo XII, in 1825, the appointment as bishop of Orvieto and cardinal in the Consistory of 15 Dec. 1828; Gregory XVI, on 20 Feb. 1833, chose him for the new office of Secretary of State for Internal Affairs and prefect of the Special Sanitary Congregation and of the Economic-Military Council. He was one of the principal collaborators of the pontificate of Gregory XVI and in every circumstance demonstrated prudence, moderation and a broad knowledge of the problems that agitated the life of the States of the Church. In 1839 he opted for the suburbicarian see of Sabina and, in 1840, having renounced the secretariat of State because of his advanced age, he became prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of Grace.
Numerous publications remain from G. that attest to his profound learning and sureness of mind. Among these are remembered the Decisioni rotali, the Summaria precum resolutiones selectae S. Congregationis Concilii, the Raccolta delle leggi pontificie e disposizioni di pubblica amministrazione, besides the Omelie, the Lettere pastorali and the Discorsi per le monache.
