GAMBERINI, ANTONIO DOMENICO. - Cardinal, b. at Imola on 31 Oct. 1760, d. at Rome on 25 Apr. 1841. He acquired renown as a profound jurist; and, after having been assistant to the studies of Msgr. Acciaiuoli Torriglioni, auditor of the Rota, he became civil assessor of the legation of Romagna (1814), auditor of the Rota for the legation and province of Ferrara (1818), and as such was appointed ponens of the Congregation of Ecclesiastical Immunity (1822).
Secretary of the Congregation of the Council and of the Residence of Bishops from 1823, he received from Leone XII, in 1825, appointment as bishop of Orvieto and cardinal in the Consistory of 15 Dec. 1828; Gregorio XVI, on 20 Feb. 1833, chose him for the new office of Secretary of State for Internal Affairs and prefect of the Special Health Congregation and of the Economic-Military Council. He was one of the principal collaborators of the pontificate of Gregorio XVI and in every circumstance displayed prudence, moderation, and broad knowledge of the problems agitating the life of the States of the Church. In 1839 he opted for the suburbicarian see of Sabina and, in 1840, having resigned the Secretariat of State because of his advanced age, became prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of Grace.
Numerous publications by G. remain, attesting to his profound learning and soundness of judgment. Among these may be mentioned the Decisioni rotali, the Summaria precum resolutiones selectae S. Congregationis Concilii, the Raccolta delle leggi pontificie e disposizioni di pubblica amministrazione, as well as the Omelie, Lettere pastorali, and Discorsi per le monache.
