GAVAZZI (Gavatius), MODESTO (Junior). - Conventual Franciscan theologian, born in Ferrara, died in Chieti in 1658. Master of theology, writer, and Scotist theologian. He studied at the College of S. Bonaventura in Rome, and was subsequently regent of studies in various convents. Procurator General of the Order (1647) and consultor of the S. Ufficio (1649), he was appointed by Iannocenzo X as censor of the Jansenist propositions condemned in 1653. He was elevated to the archiepiscopal see of Chieti one year before his death.
Among his writings, the following should be noted: De macula peccati permanenti et originalis (Bologna 1642), Opuscula theologica in quibus patissimum de processione Spiritus Sancti agitur (Rome 1650), De Vea. Eucharistius Sacram. ac Missae Sacrif. disputationes theol. ad mentem Scati (there 1656). The well-known Scotist Mastro recalls and cites him with high praise.
