JAMES OF METZ. - Dominican theologian and writer, b. at Metz. Nothing is known of his life, except that he commented twice on the Sentences of Lombard in Paris between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th. He was never a master, however. He probably had Durandus of St-Pourçain as a disciple. His Commentary on the Sentences is preserved in 7 manuscripts, of which the only complete one is in the VaticanLibrary (Borghese, cod. 122). J. is a profound and always clear theologian; in philosophy he is Aristotelian, but in theology he is influenced more by pre-Thomist Augustinianism than by St. Thomas: he denies, for example, the real distinction between nature and suppositum; in the Trinity he posits a real distinction between the divine essence and the relations; original sin would be for him a simple reatus poenae; he likewise denies the causality of the Sacraments. All doctrines taken up again by Durandus. Against him a Correctorium was written, which is almost certainly by Hervaeus Natalis, the greatest opponent of Durandus.
