CELLE, GIOVANNI delle. - Ascetic writer and translator into the vernacular. Florentine, son of Gano, a nobleman of Catignano, b. ca. 1310 and d. ca. 1396. First a Vallombrosanmonk in the convent of S. Trinita in Florence and abbot after 1346, he was imprisoned for a year for a serious transgression; he then obtained permission to withdraw to the hermitage of the Celle in Vallombrosa, whence he took his name, spending the rest of his life there in penance.
He wrote sermons and letters in Latin and in the vernacular (31 of them are known), published in part by Fr. B. Sorio: Lettere del b. G. dalle C. (Rome 1843). Zealous for uprightness and orthodoxy, he entered into the question of the heretical Fraticelli, was a familiar of St. Catherine of Siena and was said to have been miraculously healed by her. His letters in the vernacular and the translation attributed to him of the Summa de casibus conscientiae of Bart. da S. Concordio are texts of linguistic importance. Other works are lost. Translations from Cicero and Seneca are wrongly attributed to him.
