LE MOYNE, JEAN (IOANNES MONACHUS). - Distinguished canonist, b. in the first half of the 13th century, d. at Avignon on 22 Aug. 1313.

Having moved to Paris, he studied ecclesiastical law there and was appointed canon; after a stay at the Roman Curia, he was appointed bishop of Vieux and counsellor to King Philip of France. Celestine V created him cardinal (30 Sept. 1294) and Boniface VIII appointed him legate in France (1302) and then chancellor of the Holy Roman Church.

L. M. wrote an apparatus of glosses on the Liber sextus of Boniface VIII (ed. Venice 1585) and published it in 1301, notifying the University of Paris of it. This work, although not recognized as the ordinary gloss, had a wide circulation both in France and in Italy and is considered one of the best documents that have handed down the style and spirit of the French canonistic school of the Middle Ages. L. M. also wrote commentaries on certain decretals extravagantes of Boniface VIII and of Benedict XI.
