GRAFFIIS, GIACOMO de. - Moral theologian, b. at Capua in 1548, d. there on 19 Oct. 1620. He entered the Benedictine Order at Napoli, where, having taken a degree in utroque iure, he was a penitentiary and ecclesiastical censor and spent his life, except for a brief interval during which he was master of novices at Venezia.
Almost all his works are casuistic in character, among
which particularly noteworthy are the Decisiones aureae casuum conscientiae (I, Venezia 1591; II, there 1595), with an appendix (Bologna 1603) and Additamenta (Venezia 1610); Consilia seu Responsa casuum conscientiae (there 1604); Practica casuum s. Pontifici reservatorum... (Napoli 1609); De arbitrariis confessariorum (there 1613). He also wrote oratorical works, besides a theological work (De potestate papae) which remained unpublished.
As a moral theologian he ranks among the most highly esteemed of the seventeenth century.
