Guido de Suzaria

GUIDO de SUZARIA. - Jurist, belonging to the group of post-glossators, b. probably at Suzara (Mantua) on an uncertain date: he lived between 1260 and 1292 and was successively professor at Modena, Padua, Bologna, counsellor to Charles of Anjou and again professor at Reggio Emilia and at Bologna, where, it seems, he died. He was the teacher of Giacomo de Arena, of Guido da Baisio and of Alberto Gandino. He was proposed as bishop of Turin, but excluded, it appears, because of his married state, although, as far as is known, it was only a ratified marriage.

He wrote a commentary on Gratian's Decretum (De primo et secundo decreto), published in the collection Tractatus universi iuris (III, II, ff. 136v-39v [the work, however, is disputed as his]); glosses, additions to the Glosa of Accursius, other glosses on the Digestum vetus and Additiones ad Summam Azonis. Diplovataccio cites commentaries on the Digestum vetus and novum; Giovanni Andrea speaks of Quaestiones statutorum.

He also wrote various treatises on law, among them: De ordinatione causarum (in Tractatus ex universi iuris interpretibus collecti, IV, Lyon 1549, f. 21 ff.); De testibus (ibid., X, f. 85 ff.); De tormentis et quaestionibus (in Tractatus universi iuris, XI, I, f. 241 ff.); De iure emphiteutico (ibid., VII, f. 185 ff.), Tractatus gravantigie secundum morem civitatis Tuscie (ibid., VI, II, ff. 338v-339v). This last treatise is disputed as his (cod. Ott. lat. 1726, ff. 65v-70v attributes it to a «de Aguglionibus de Florentia») or at least is held to be interpolated.
