LE MOYNE, JEAN (IOANNES MONACHUS). — Distinguished canonist, born in the first half of the 13th century, died at Avignon on 22 August 1313.

After moving to Paris, he studied canon law there and was appointed a canon; following a stay at the Roman Curia, he was appointed bishop of Vieux and counsellor to King Filippo of France. Celestine V created him a cardinal (30 September 1294), and Boniface VIII appointed him legate to France (1302) and then chancellor of the Holy Roman Church.

L. M. wrote a gloss apparatus on the Liber sextus of Boniface VIII (ed. Venice 1585) and published it in 1301, notifying the University of Paris. Although it was not recognized as the ordinary gloss, this work achieved wide circulation both in France and Italy and is considered one of the finest documents to have transmitted the style and spirit of the medieval French canonistic school. L. M. also wrote commentaries on several decretals extravagantes of Boniface VIII and Benedict XI.
