LORENZO VENEZIANO. - Painter, documented from 1356 to 1379. He was in Bologna, Padua and perhaps Treviso.

His dated works are the great altarpiece of 1357 in the Galleries of Venice (Annunciation and Saints), the Marriage of St. Catherine (there), the altarpiece of 1365 with The Death of the Virgin and Saints from the cathedral of Vicenza, the precious Delivery of the Keys to St. Peter in the Correr Museum in Venice (1370), a Madonna of 1372 in the Louvre and others. Among the attributed works, a graceful and rich small altarpiece formerly at the Ca' d'oro in Venice and now in Milan (Brera).

Trained certainly in the Byzantinizing climate of the workshop of Maestro Paolo, from which derive the solemn structure of the compositions and the typical hieraticism of many figures, L. then develops a style of his own in which there is a constant search for linear elegances and chromatic preciousness, of purely Gothic taste, occasionally falling into the affected and the precious. He also undergoes the influence of contemporary Bolognese painting and of Tommaso da Modena. On account of its pronounced Byzantinism, a group of paintings comprising a polyptych in S. Giacomo in Bologna, one in the Museum of Worcester, and other works has instead been taken away from L., to be returned to Maestro Paolo.
