LUCIANI, AGOSTINO. - Hussite apostate, a native of Vicenza, died in Prague on 1 March 1493. Consecrated bishop of Santorini, he did not hesitate to confer priestly ordination on certain Hussite candidates at Mirandola and Modena. Warned off for this by the Holy See, he even thought of moving to Bohemia (1482), where he was welcomed by the heretics as their bishop.

The attempts immediately made by Sixtus IV by every means to recall him to his precise duties were to no avail, for L., availing himself of the protection of the Ultraquist party, continued with impunity to carry on his unlawful activity in Bohemia. Repentant nonetheless of his apostasy and determined to return to Italy, he turned for this purpose first to the bishop of Passau at the end of 1484, and then, in 1486, to Card. G. Arciboldi, in order to obtain the pardon of the Holy See. But, intimidated by the injunction of Innocent VIII to return to Rome without any delay, he changed his mind once again, preferring to remain among the Bohemian heretics until the end.
