MONTEVERDE. - Ancient diocese in the province of Avellino, created in the year 1175 by Pope Alexander III. The settlement lies at 740 m. above sea level, apparently on the ruins of a fortress of Aquilonia. The first bishop, Mario, obtained a privilege from Geoffrey, count of Andria.

The Cathedral, dedicated to the B. Virgin, erected in the 14th century, was modified in 1728 and rebuilt in 1901. The diocese was a suffragan of Conza. In 1531 Clement

VII established that the three dioceses of M., Canne and Nazareth should be united together, and therefore Paul III in 1536, upon the death of Msgr. F. Adimari, archbishop of Nazareth, Canne also being vacant, appointed the bishop of M., Msgr. G. Caro, archbishop of Nazareth and bishop of Canne and of M. The diocese was suppressed by Pope Pius VII with the letter De utiliore Dominicae of 1818, uniting M. to that of S. Angelo dei Lombardi and instead Canne and Nazareth to that of Trani.
