NICOLA di TRANI, detto anche NICOLA il PELLEGRINO, santo

Italian original Cite

NICHOLAS of TRANI, also called NICHOLAS the PILGRIM, Saint. - Born in Greece near Stiro, died at Trani on 2 June 1094.

According to the legend, he gave prodigious signs already from his infancy, and, after a vision, he took up the habit of pronouncing aloud the invocation "Kyrie eleison"; deemed for this reason a maniac, he was driven from home and then handed over to the monks of the monastery of S. Luca, suffering many trials. After spending some years in solitude, he miraculously crossed the sea, came to Apulia where he passed through Idrunto (Otranto), Taranto, and finally to Trani. There he died a few days after his arrival. Because of the many miracles performed, Urban II canonized him in 1098. Principal patron of the city of Trani; feast on 2 June.
