OGLERIO di TRINO, blessed. - Cistercian abbot, d. 10 Sept. 1214. From about 1205 until his death he was abbot of the monastery of S. Maria di Lucedio near Trino Vercellese. His cult ab immemorabili was confirmed by Pius IX on 18 Apr. 1875.
The thirteenth-century Staffarda codex (Turin, University Library: E. V. 4; Lat. 761) attributes to him the Tractatus in laudibus s. Dei Genitricis, a collection of sermons addressed to women religious, composed before 1206, and the Expositio super Evangelium in Coena Domini in 13 homilies, written, while already abbot, for his monks; the latter was attributed to S. Bernardo in the earliest editions of Bernardine works. The same is true of the sermon Quis dabis from the Tractatus (G. B. Adriani [V. BIBLICA.], pp. 80-90), published under the title: Tractatus b. Bernardi de lamentatione V. Mariae (cf. E. De Levis, Anecdota sacra, Turin 1789, pp. 60-99).
The religious ideas and the exposition, replete with biblical expressions and liturgical reminiscences, often in the form of moving and insistent dialogue, are inspired by the ascetic atmosphere and the language of the Bernardine and Cistercian works of the period; but, with regard to the Immaculate Conception, O. in the Expositio (G. B. Adriani, p. 226) departs from the negative opinion of S. Bernardo, which he had previously followed (Tractatus, in G. B. Adriani, p. 3), with a vigorous affirmation of this singular privilege of Maria.
