PISACANE, CARLO. - Patriot and writer, b. in Naples on 22 Aug. 1818, d. at Sanza on 2 July 1857. Of a noble family, he entered the Collegio della Nunziatella at the age of thirteen and then the army (corps of engineers). He later emigrated to Marseille, to London and finally to Paris. Returning from Africa, where he had enlisted in the Foreign Legion, he fought in Lombardy in 1848.
Once the Republic was proclaimed in Rome, he presented himself to Mazzini on 10 March 1849 and was the organizer of the republican army. In conflict with Garibaldi, he returned to reaffirm his severe judgments in the work Guerra combattuta in Italia negli anni 1848-49, published in 1851 in Genoa, where he had taken refuge and where he lived until 1857 devoted to his studies; the fruit of these are the Saggi storici-politici-militari sull'Italia, which appeared posthumously in Genoa (1858) and in Milan (1860) in 4 vols. Having drawn close to Mazzini again in 1855, after a tension due to divergences over the social question, he opposed together with him the Crimean enterprise and Murattism. Believing that the Italian revolution could be achieved through a popular action in the South, he organized the expedition of Sapri, which ended with his death. On the eve of departure he handed over to Jessie White documents and papers and his will, a document of political faith.
After having adhered to Mazzinian theories, P. [Pisacane]
he drew closer on one side to Cattaneo and on the other to the French socialists. For him liberty and socialism are not irreconcilable, but rather complement each other. Relying on the authority of Proudhon, he affirmed that the liberty of each person encounters in the liberty of others not a limit but a help: the freest man is the one who has the greatest number of relations with his fellow men; P. expressed his thought in the formula: Liberty and association.
