POPPO, Saint. - Benedictine abbot, b. in 978 to a noble Flemish family, d. at Marchiennes on 25 January 1948. He was one of the most effective collaborators of Richard of St-Vanne in the restoration of the monasteries of the Rhineland region and of the Low Countries.
After two pilgrimages (to the Holy Land ca. 1000 and to Rome in 1005), he suddenly renounced a plan of marriage and the military life, to which his noble origin destined him, in order to embrace the Benedictine life in the monastery of St-Thierry at Reims (ca. 1008), directed by Gilbert, brother of the bishop of Cambrai, Gerard I. Richard of St-Vanne recognized his merits and sent him as prior to the monastery of St-Vaast d'Arras (1012), whose possessions, usurped by lay lords, he was able to recover with the help of the count of Flanders. P. is known above all as abbot of Stavelot-Malmédy, from which he began to radiate his influence. The emperors Henry II, Conrad II and Henry III furthermore entrusted to him the abbey of S. Massimiano of Trier and the task of restoring monastic life in the monasteries of St-Vincent of Metz, of Limburg, Hersfeld, S. Gallo, St-Ghislain, St-Trond and Marchiennes. In exchange for imperial protection and generosity, P. lent himself as a negotiator between the German sovereigns and the court of France. He was undoubtedly a type of imperial abbot, but he contributed, also through his intimate and profound religious life, to preparing the ground from which the reform of Cluny began to flourish.
