RIGAUD (Rigaldi), JEAN (Johannes). — French Franciscan theologian, born in the diocese of Limoges, died at Avignon before 16 Sept. 1323. He entered the Order when, as he himself relates, many friars who had known St Anthony of Padua were still alive. He was Apostolic Penitentiary; on 21 Feb. 1317 he was appointed Bishop of Tréguier (Brittany).
He wrote: *Vita b. Antonii*, one of the principal sources for the life of the Saint (ed. F. M. d'Araules [Delorme], *La vie de St Antoine de Padoue*, Bordeaux-Brive 1899; Italian trans., Quaracchi 1902); *Formula confessionum*, dedicated to B. Frédol, Bishop of Tusculum; *Compendium theologica pauperis*, published at Basel in 1501 under the name of St Bonaventure, without the long series of outlines of Sunday and Lenten sermons that follow it in the manuscripts. The work is a compilation based mainly on the *Compendium theologica veritatis* of Hugh of Strasbourg. R. in his *Compendium* refers to his *Expositio Missae* and says he also wrote Sunday sermons. These two works have not yet been recovered.
