LICHETO (LECHETO), FRANCESCO. - Scotist theologian and Minister General of the Friars Minor, b. at Lovere (Bergamo), d. at Budapest on 15 Sept. 1520. He taught theology at Brescia and from 1509 to 1512 publicly lectured on the works of Scotus at Naples.
His commentaries on the first three books of the Op. Oxoniense and the Quodlibet from 1512 onward were published repeatedly and were also introduced into the editions of Scotus's Opera omnia. At the General Chapter of Lyon, on 11 July 1518, he was elected Minister General. He was given the task of carrying out the provisions of Leo X concerning the union among the various reformed branches of the Order. In a short time he visited the provinces of Italy, France, Germany, Bohemia and Poland; he reorganized studies and fought against Luther. Leo X appointed him nuncio and apostolic commissioner with the charge of collecting funds for the completion of St. Peter's Basilica. After presiding over the Provincial Chapter of Kraków he went to Budapest, where he arrived already gravely ill.
