LICHETO (LECHETO), FRANCESCO. - Scotist theologian and minister general of the Friars Minor, b. at Lovere (Bergamo), d. at Budapest on 15 Sept. 1520. He taught theology at Brescia and, from 1509 to 1512, publicly interpreted the works of Scoto at Naples.
His commentaries on the first three books of the Op. Oxonieme and the Quodlibet were repeatedly published from 1512 onward and were also included in editions of Scoto’s Opera omnia. At the General Chapter of Lyons, on 11 July 1518, he was elected minister general. He was charged with carrying out the provisions of Leone X concerning the union of the various reformed branches of the Order. In a short time he visited the provinces of Italy, France, Germany, Bohemia, and Poland; he reorganized studies and opposed Lutero. Leone X appointed him nuncio and apostolic commissioner, with the task of raising funds for the completion of the basilica of S. Pietro. After presiding over the provincial chapter of Cracovia, he went to Budapest, where he arrived already seriously ill.
