GIOSEPPE SACCO. — Orientalist, b. Sciacca (Agrigento) 5 Nov. 1871, d. Chianciano (Siena) 5 May 1950.
Ordained in 1895, he perfected his biblical and Oriental language studies at St Stephen’s, Jerusalem, LAGRANGE, GIUSEPPE LUIGI (v.), and from 1913 taught Hebrew and New Testament Greek at the Lateran Athenaeum and shortly afterwards also at the Propaganda Fide Athenaeum. His works on biblical philology were highly esteemed: La Koinè del Nuovo Testamento e la trasmissione del S. M. Testo (Rome 1928); La Volgata Latina e il testo greco del Nuovo Testamento (ibid. 1935); L'Epistola ai Romani nella versione della Volgata e in una versione dal greco (ibid. 1935). Also noteworthy are the volume Le credenze religiose di Maometto. Loro origini e rapporti con la tradizione giudaico-cristiana (ibid. 1922) and the Lateran lectures: Il Mare Morto (Rome 1919), Petra e i monumenti funerari dei Nabatei (ibid. 1920), Il santuario della Natività (ibid. 1914). He retired in 1938 to an ex-convent at Chianciano and spent his final years in meditation on the Pauline epistles.
