SACCO, GIUSEPPE. - Orientalist, b. at Sciacca (Agrigento) on 5 Nov. 1871, d. at Chianciano (Siena) on 5 May 1950.
Ordained in 1895, he furthered his studies in biblical scholarship and Oriental languages at St. Stephen’s in Jerusalem, at the school of Fr. LAGRANGE, GIUSEPPE LUIGI (v.), and from 1913 taught Hebrew and New Testament Greek at the Lateran Athenaeum and shortly afterwards also at that of Propaganda Fide. Much appreciated in the field of biblical philology were: La Koinè del Nuovo Testamento e la trasmissione del S.mo Testo (Rome 1928); La Volgata Latina e il testo greco del Nuovo Testamento (ibid. 1935); L'Epistola ai Romani nella versione della Volgata e in una versione dal greco (ibid. 1935). Also noteworthy were the volume Le credenze religiose di Maometto. Loro origini e rapporti con la tradizione giudaico-cristiana (ibid. 1922) and the Conferenze al Laterano: Il Mare Morto (Rome 1919), Petra e i monumenti funerari dei Nabatei (ibid. 1920), Il santuario della Natività (ibid. 1914). Having withdrawn in 1938 to a former convent at Chianciano, he spent his final years meditating on the Pauline letters.
