SALOMONE SETTENTRIONALI, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE of the Islands - Dwelling and school for Asitavi boys.

Dominican mystic, b. in Venice in 1231 to a patrician family, d. at Forlì on 13 May 1314.

He entered the Order of Friars Preachers at the age of 17 at SS. Giovanni e Paolo, after having distributed his patrimony to the poor. He was subsequently sub-prior or vicar in the convents of Ravenna, Faenza, and S. Severino. He carried out a great part of his religious activity at Forlì in the convent of S. Domenico, which earned him the title of "apostle of Forlì." According to an ancient tradition, the blessed S. founded or reformed the confraternity of the "Battuti Bianchi," which had the task of assisting poor children. His contemplative life was marked by charisms: ecstasy during Mass, the gift of tears, the secret of hearts, prophecy. A Venetian reform of the Dominican Order was named after him. In the current Dominican Missal (ed. Rome 1933) his feast is on 5 June.
