SALOMONE SETTENTRIONALI, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE of the Islands - Residence and school for Asian boys.
Dominican mystic, b. in Venezia in 1231 of a patrician family, d. at Forlì on 13 May 1314.
At the age of 17 he entered the Friars Preachers at SS. Giovanni e Paolo, after distributing his patrimony to the poor. He subsequently served as subprior or vicar in the convents of Ravenna, Faenza, and S. Severino. He carried out a great part of his religious activity at Forlì, in the convent of S. Domenico, which earned him the title of “apostle of Forlì.” According to an ancient tradition, Blessed S. founded or reformed the confraternity of the “Battuti Bianchi,” whose task was to assist poor children. His contemplative life was marked by charisms: ecstasies during Mass, the gift of tears, knowledge of hearts, and prophecy. A Venetian reform of the Dominican Order was named after him. In the present Dominican Messale (Rome ed. 1933), his feast is observed on 5 June.
