SÁNCHEZ (Sanctius), JUAN. - One of the most typical representatives of 17th-century laxism, b. at Avila, in Spain, and d. ca. 1624.
A man of vast erudition, he wrote, among other things, two monographs
De seimio and De dubia impotentia circa matrimonium (Madrid 1624, Lyon 1636). But his most notable work is the Selectae et practicae disputationes de rebus in administratione Sacramentorum (Madrid 1624), which is a fine synthesis on the practical questions of the administration of the Sacraments, especially of the Eucharist and of Penance. After the author's death the work was placed on the Index (decr. 3-18 Dec. 1642) donec corrigatur, on account of the numerous laxist opinions upheld in it.
The 4th proposition condemned by Innocent XI is S.'s: « Ab infidelitate excusabitur infidelia non credens, ductus opinione minus probabili ». S. maintained, together with Caramuel and others, that every opinion that is speculatively probable is also practically probable; that all probable opinions are also equally safe (tutae), since whoever acts according to one or the other probable opinion is certain that he does not sin.
