STANDARD (signum, vexillum; vessillo, gonfalone). — In ecclesiastical usage, as noted in the Roman Ritual (tit. X, cap. 1, n. 5), these are banners in which the cloth hangs from a horizontal crossbar attached to the vertical staff, which is surmounted by a cross.
