TENCIN, PIERRE - GUÉRIN de. - Cardinal, born at Grenoble on 22 Aug. 1679, died at Lyon on 2 March 1758.
In 1721 he accompanied Cardinal de Bissy to Rome, where he remained until 1724 as chargé d’affaires for France following the departure of Cardinal de Rohan. In 1724 he was appointed Archbishop of Embrun, where in 1727 he convened a provincial council and secured the condemnation of the Jansenist bishop of Sens, Soanen. Created cardinal by Clement XII on 15 July 1739, he became Archbishop of Lyon in February 1740. He was a close friend of Lambertini and helped secure his elevation to the papacy. From 1740 to 1742 he again resided in Rome as the king’s chargé d’affaires. In 1742 he was named Minister of State and from that year until 1756 served as apostolic legate in France. During these years Benedict XIV maintained a lively correspondence with him, later published in French translation: E. de Heeckeren, Lettres de Benoît au card. de T. (2 vols., Paris 1912).
