VALIER (VALERIO), AGOSTINO. — Cardinal, b. at Legnago on 7 Apr. 1530, d. at Rome on 23 May 1606.

From 1558 he taught moral philosophy in Venice; in 1565 he was called to succeed his uncle Cardinal Navagero in the episcopal see of Verona. A friend and imitator of St Charles Borromeo, he was, like him, one of the most zealous bishops in applying the Tridentine reform and in restoring religious life among the clergy and people. He founded the seminary, convened synods, and established pious works and hospitals. In 1580 he was appointed apostolic visitor for the Venetian, Istrian, and Dalmatian provinces; in 1583 he became a cardinal. He was on terms of great friendship and familiarity with St Philip Neri, whom he portrayed vividly in his Dialogo della letizia cristiana. Other works, both published and unpublished, remain by him.
