VALIER (VALERIO), AGOSTINO. - Cardinal, b. at Legnago on 7 April 1530, d. at Rome on 23 May 1606.

From 1558 he was a lecturer in moral philosophy at Venice; in 1565 he was called to succeed the holy cardinal Navagero in the episcopal see of Verona. A friend and imitator of St. Charles, he was like him one of the bishops most zealous in applying the Tridentine reform and in restoring religious life among the clergy and the people. He founded the Seminary, convened synods, established charitable works and hospitals. In 1580 he was apostolic visitor for the Venetian, Istrian and Dalmatian provinces; in 1583 he became a cardinal. He was on terms of great friendship and intimacy with St. Philip Neri, whom he portrayed vividly in his Dialogo della letizia cristiana. Other works, both published and unpublished, remain by him.
