VALIER (VALERIO), AGOSTINO. — Cardinal, born in Legnago on 7 April 1530, died in Rome on 23 May 1606.

From 1558 he was lecturer in moral philosophy at Venice; in 1565 he was called to succeed the late Cardinal Navagero in the episcopal see of Verona. A friend and imitator of S. Carlo, like him he was one of the bishops most zealous in applying the Tridentine reform and restoring religious life among the clergy and the people. He founded the Seminary, convened synods, and established charitable institutions and hospitals. In 1580 he was apostolic visitor for the Venetian, Istrian, and Dalmatian provinces; in 1583 he became a cardinal. He was on terms of great friendship and intimacy with S.
