TARUGI, FRANCESCO MARIA. - Cardinal, b. at Montepulciano on 27 Aug. 1525, d. at Rome on 11 June 1608.

Nephew of Julius III and a blood relative of Marcellus II, brilliant, cultured, pleasant, he was set upon a curial career at a young age. In 1565, conquered by the charm of St. Philip Neri, he entered the Congregation of the Oratory. In 1571 he accompanied Card. Bonelli on his journey to the sovereigns of Europe for the league against the Turks. In 1586 he founded the Oratory of Naples, where he remained until 1592, when Clement VIII named him archbishop of Avignon.

He adorned that see with his virtues and zeal in applying the Tridentine reform and in the conversion of heretics; he introduced the Philippian Oratory into France, from which the Congregation of Bérulle later originated. In June 1596 he was invested with the purple and in 1597 he was transferred to the see of Siena. In that year he established peace between the dukes of Parma and Mantua. T., together with Baronio, was one of the most distinguished glories of the Oratory and among the beloved sons of St. Philip. In 1606 he renounced the see of Siena and wished to retire among his confreres at the Vallicella.
