ZALLWEIN, GREGOR. - Canonist, b. at Oberveichtach on 20 Oct. 1712, d. at Salzburg between 6 and 9 Aug. 1766.
He entered the Benedictine abbey of Wessobrunn (1733) and was ordained in 1737; he took his doctorate in canon law at Salzburg (1737–39), served as master of novices (1739) and prior (1744) in the same abbey. Called by the Prince-Bishop of Gurk to teach canon law in the new seminary at Klagenfurt (1745–49), he was awarded degrees in theology and civil law, and thereafter taught canon law at the Benedictine University of Salzburg until his death, serving as rector from 1759. He devoted himself especially to the history of canonical sources and institutions; his writings, though not always clear, enjoyed great renown. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences at Munich.
