Zallwein, Gregor

ZALLWEIN, GREGOR. - Canonist, b. at Oberviechtach on 20 Oct. 1712, d. at Salzburg between 6 and 9 Aug. 1766.

He entered the Benedictine abbey of Wessobrun (1733) and was ordained in 1737; he obtained a doctorate in canon law at Salzburg (1737-39), was master of novices (1739) and prior (1744) in the same abbey. Summoned by the prince-bishop of Gurk to teach canon law in the new Seminary of Strasbourg in Carinthia (1745-49), he was awarded a degree in theology and in civil law, then taught canon law until his death at the Benedictine University of Salzburg, of which he was rector from 1759. He devoted himself in particular to the history of the sources and institutions of canon law: his writings, although not very clear, enjoyed great fame. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of Munich.
