ZALLWEIN, GREGOR. - Canonist, born at Oberviechtach on 20 October 1712, died at Salisburgo between 6 and 9 August 1766.
He entered the Benedictine abbey of Wessobrun (1733) and was ordained in 1737; he earned a doctorate in canon law at Salisburgo (1737–39), and was master of novices (1739) and prior (1744) in the same abbey. Called by the prince-bishop of Gurk to teach canon law at the new Seminary of Strasburgo in Carinzia (1745–49), he was awarded degrees in theology and civil law; he then taught canon law until his death at the Benedictine University of Salisburgo, of which he was rector from 1759. He devoted himself especially to the history of canonical sources and institutions: his writings, though not very clear, enjoyed great renown. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of Monaco.
