Excultioribus templis
Letter elevating the church of St. Maternus in Walcourt to a minor basilica
THE CHURCH OF ST. MATERNUS, STANDING IN THE TOWN OF WALCOURT IN THE DIOCESE OF NAMUR, IS HONORED WITH THE TITLE AND PRIVILEGES OF A MINOR BASILICA. PIUS PP. XII
1 To the perpetual memory of the matter. — The Apostolic See has always been accustomed to add distinction to the more excellent temples and those more religious and frequented at all times, whereby to sharpen and increase the piety of the Christian faithful more earnestly. Among these the Church dedicated to God in honor of St. Maternus holds a certain place, by which the town of "Walcourt," situated within the bounds of the Diocese of Namur, is not insignificantly ennobled. In this edifice the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary has such veneration that crowds of suppliants continually resort there with unceasing zeal and eagerness. This also redounds to the praise of this distinguished temple, which is traced back to the most ancient age, since, as histories have handed down, it is one of the most ancient of all sacred places which are commended in Belgium on account of the cult of the Virgin Mother of God. Moreover, in the form and appearance which it now presents, the Church was erected in the eleventh century, when also the honor of a Collegiate Church was decreed to it, nor were there lacking those through the passing centuries who would enhance it with most skillful works, so that the "Romanesque" and "Gothic" styles and other remarkable features, with which it is filled, would come together in outstanding beauty. Worthy of mention indeed is the singers' gallery, abundantly and most sumptuously adorned, which is said to be a noble monument of the munificence of the Emperor Charles V. The treasure also is not without reason admired, since it abounds in the force of wrought gold. On account of the veneration of the image of the Most Blessed Virgin, which is wooden, covered with silver, conspicuous in "Romanesque" art, and numbered among the most ancient statues of the Nourishing Mother of God in the Belgian realm, a great multitude of Christian faithful from the whole region has been accustomed to betake themselves to this Church as to a refuge of salvation and a place of solace, especially on the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, on which festive day a most solemn procession is conducted through the town. Now, after the completion of seventy-five years since this image was crowned with a golden crown by the authority of Pius PP. IX, of happy memory, Our predecessor, the ecclesiastical men, nobles and inhabitants of that place, through Our Venerable Brother Andrew Charue, Bishop of Namur, have brought to Us humble petitions, that We should deign to enroll the temple of which We have spoken among the Minor Basilicas. We, however, who strive with all effort that we may bring greater increase to the cult of the Blessed Virgin Mary everywhere, have determined to fulfill such wishes with willing mind. Wherefore, having consulted the Sacred Congregation of Rites, with certain knowledge and mature deliberation of Ours and from the fullness of Apostolic power, by the force of these letters and in perpetuity, We raise the Church of St. Maternus in the town called "Walcourt" and situated within the bounds of the Diocese of Namur to the dignity and honor of a Minor Basilica, with all rights and privileges adjoined, which rightly belong to the same title. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary. We decree these things, establish and determine that these present letters are firm, valid and effective, and shall remain so; and that they shall produce and obtain their full and complete effects; and that they shall most fully avail for those to whom they pertain, or may pertain, now and in the future: and thus they are to be rightly judged and determined; and that anything done otherwise, concerning these matters, by anyone, by whatever authority, knowingly or unknowingly, shall be rendered null and void from now on. Given at Rome, at St. Peter's, under the Fisherman's Ring, on the 13th day of the month of May, in the year 1950, in the twelfth year of Our pontificate.

ECCLESIA SANCTI MATERNI, IN OPPIDO ((WALCOURT)) DIOECESIS NAMURCENSIS EXSTANS, BASILICAE MINORIS TITULO AC PRIVILEGIIS COHONESTATUR. PIUS PP. XII
1 Ad perpetuam rei memoriam. — Excultioribus Templis magisque religiosis ac frequentibus nullo non tempore Sedes Apostolica decus addere solebat, quo Christifidelium pietatem impensius exacueret et amplificaret. In his aliquem obtinet locum Ecclesia Deo in honorem Sancti Materni dicata, qua oppidum « Walcourt », intra fines Namurcensis dioeceseos positum, haud mediocriter nobilitatur. Iamvero, expleto LXXV anno a quo hoc signum auctoritate Pii PP.
