Innoc. VIII cost. 1, Summis, tom. v, p. 296. In.
§ 8. Poiché veramente difficile ecc.
4 A nessuno dunque ecc.

1 1 Sixtus episcopus , servus servorum Dei, ad perpetuam rei memoriam. § 1 . Vili const. i, Summis, tom. v, p. 296. In.

Against those practicing the art of judicial astrology and any other kinds of divination, and reading or possessing books [on these subjects]
1 1 Sixtus, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter. § 1. God, Creator of heaven and earth, whom we confess with our lips to be just and unto salvation, although He has given to man, whom He created in His image and likeness, a mind which, not only illuminated by the divine light of faith, might know those mysteries which surpass human understanding, but also by the force of his own nature, albeit with great labour, might investigate and understand many excellent things, yet in order that proud man might not think himself wise in lofty things, but might fear, and prostrate on the ground might venerate the immense majesty of his Creator, He has reserved to Himself alone the knowledge of things which are to come and the cognition of future events. For He alone, whose eyes all things are naked and open unto, and who penetrates to the inmost thoughts of men, and consequently beholds their actions; He alone, who calls those things that are not as those that are, has all things present and before His eyes; He alone, finally, knows from all eternity and has disposed by admirable providence all and singular whatsoever things are to come throughout the whole course of time and the ages of centuries, which knowledge not only the weakness of the human mind is ignorant of, but neither can the demons themselves foresee. Wherefore the Holy Spirit derides the falsehood and weakness of idols in announcing future things, and the vanity of those who paid them worship, by those words in Isaias: Declare the things that are to come hereafter, and we shall know that you are gods. And in the New Testament Christ the Lord repressed the somewhat too eager inquiry of His disciples concerning future events with that grave response, by which He also restrained the curiosity of all His faithful: It is not for you to know the times or moments, which the Father hath put in His own power. Nor indeed are there any true arts or disciplines for foreknowing future events and fortuitous occurrences and those preceding constitutions indicated in Innoc. VIII const. 1, Summis, tom. v, p. 296. In. C. 1586 Sixtus (future events arising necessarily or frequently from natural causes, which do not pertain to divination, being alone excepted), but rather they are fallacious and vain, introduced by the cunning of wicked men and the frauds of demons, from whose operation, counsel or aid all divination proceeds, whether because they are expressly invoked to manifest future things, or because they themselves, by their depravity and hatred toward mankind, secretly and even contrary to man's intention thrust themselves in and intrude upon vain inquiries into future things, that the minds of men may be entangled in pernicious vanities and false foretelling of contingent things, and be corrupted by every kind of impiety. Which things are indeed known to them, not by any divinity nor by true knowledge of future things, but by the acuteness of a subtler nature, and by certain other ways which the duller intelligence of men is ignorant of. Wherefore there is no doubt that in such inquiry and foreknowledge of future contingent and fortuitous events, the operation of the devil falsely mingles itself, that by his fraud and deceits he may turn wretched men from the way of salvation, and involve them in the snare of damnation. Since these things are so, certain ones, not attending to these matters faithfully and religiously as they ought, but pursuing curious things, gravely offend God, erring themselves and leading others into error; such are in the first place astrologers, formerly called mathematicians, genethliacs and planetarians, who, professing a vain and false science of the stars and heavenly bodies, and most audaciously endeavouring to forestall the ordinance of divine disposition to be revealed in its own time, determine the nativities or genitures of men from the motion of the stars and the course of the heavenly bodies, and judge future things, or even present and past hidden things; and from the birth of children and their natal day, or from any other most vain observation and notation of times and moments, they presume rashly to foreknow, judge and affirm concerning the state, condition, course of life, honours, riches, offspring, salvation, death, journeys, contests, enmities, imprisonments, slaughters, various perils and other prosperous and adverse cases and events of each man, not without great danger of error and infidelity; since St. Augustine, the chief light of the Church, affirms that he who observes these things, who heeds them, who receives them into his house, who questions them, has broken the Christian faith and baptism, so that the Apostle rightly reproves and rebukes them with these words: You observe days and months and times and years; I am afraid of you, lest perhaps I have laboured in vain among you. These therefore most frivolous and rash men, to the lamentable ruin of their own souls, grave scandal to the faithful, and detriment to the Christian faith, ascribe to the stars and heavenly bodies future events of things and whatsoever shall happen prosperously or adversely, and human acts, and those things which proceed from the free will of men, and attribute to them that faculty, force or virtue and efficacy of signifying future things, and of inclining those things foreknown so that they shall happen in no other way, and for that reason do not hesitate to make judgments concerning all these matters, to assume and openly sell prognostications, predictions and foreknowings; to which few rude and ignorant persons, and others too credulous and imprudent, give such credence, that from the prescription of such judgments and predictions they believe or hope that something certain is to be. The temerity of whose false teachers and the credulity of their unhappy disciples is surely much to be deplored, who, though admonished by divine writings, do not understand the excellence of man, to whom the heavens and stars and the most brilliant stars of heaven, the sun and moon, do not command but serve, as God has disposed; for thus Moses warned the people of God, that they might avoid this error: Beware lest perhaps thou lift up thy eyes to heaven, and seeing the sun and the moon and all the stars of heaven, being deceived by error thou adore and serve them; which the Lord thy God created to be in service to all nations that are under heaven. But why is it wonderful that the stars serve man? Are not the noblest intelligences, the angels themselves, all ministering spirits, sent in ministry for them who shall receive the inheritance of salvation? For God so loves rational sheep, that not only has He ordained bishops, as it is written by St. Ambrose, to guard the flock, but has also sent angels. St. Jerome also speaks excellently: Great is the dignity of souls, that each one from the moment of its birth should have an angel assigned to its guardianship. If angels guard men, what can the stars accomplish or effect against the guardianship and protection of angels, which cannot in any way be compared with the angels themselves? Nor indeed should the opinion of that eminent doctor of the Church and most blessed Pontiff, the great Gregory, be passed over here, who refutes with great weight of things and words the heretical Priscillianists, who thought that each man is born under the constitutions of the stars. God forbid, he says, that it should enter the hearts of the faithful to say that anything is fate; for the Creator alone, who made life, administers it for men, nor is man made for the stars, but the stars for men, and if a star is said to be the fate of a man, man is said to be subject to its ministries. Would that insane men might know and understand these things, and obey the warnings of God in Leviticus, saying: Turn ye not to wizards, nor ask anything of soothsayers, that you be not defiled by them. For they would not investigate with such zeal those things which Christian and true piety rejects and condemns, nor would they miserably suffer themselves to be deceived and ensnared by them. There are also certain vain and curious men, or impious and irreligious ones, who are so anxious to have knowledge of future and other hidden things, that in order to foreknow and investigate the same they incur manifold offence against the divine law. For some do not fear to apply themselves to geomancy, hydromancy, aeromancy, pyromancy, onomancy, chiromancy, necromancy and other sortileges and superstitions, not without at least the secret society or tacit pact of demons, or to use illicit lots and fortunes by the casting of dice, grains of wheat or beans. Others, retaining certain relics of ancient and antiquated idolatry, now overthrown by the victory of the Cross, apply themselves to divination of future things by certain auguries, auspices and similar signs and vain observations. Others again are those who make a covenant with death, and make a pact with hell, who, similarly for divination of hidden things, for finding treasures, or for perpetrating other crimes, even with an express pact made with the devil, to the manifest destruction of their own souls, employ the nefarious incantations, instruments and poisons of the magical art, describe circles and diabolical characters, invoke or consult demons, seek or receive answers from them, offer to them prayers and incense or other things by way of fumigations or vapours or other sacrifices, light candles, or sacrilegiously abuse sacred things or sacraments or sacramentals, render worship, genuflection or any other impious obedience, pay them cult, veneration or tribute; or make for themselves or cause to be made small phials, to bind or enclose demons in them, as they think, that they may seek or obtain answers from them thence. Others moreover even in the bodies of the possessed or in lymphatic and fanatical women inquire of demons concerning future or hidden things or deeds, so that they deservedly receive from them, whom the Lord commanded in the Gospel to be silent, vain and false responses. Others also, prestidigitators, but more frequently certain superstitious women, in phials or glass vessels filled with water, or in a mirror, with lighted candles, even blessed ones, under the name of a holy and white angel, suppliantly adore the devil, the sower of all evils, or sometimes anointed with oil on the nails or palm of the hand, pray to that same architect of all falsehoods, the devil, that he similarly show them future or any hidden things through spectra and appearing images or phantastic visions, or from that same father of lies, the devil, by other incantations or various observations of superstition, they seek such truth of future and hidden things, and strive to predict them to men. All of whom, whom we have enumerated above, have a like impiety and a like end, namely that those who divine and those who seek divination are most miserably deceived and deluded by the deceits and wiles of demons. Therefore, since it is the property of God alone to consider future events in themselves before they happen, it necessarily follows that astrologers and the others aforesaid, who dare to foretell or foreknow such future things in any way, unless God reveal them, unjustly and impudently assume and usurp what is God's. Thus it comes to pass that while that which is the sole property of the Creator is wrongly attributed to creatures by them, the divine Majesty is gravely injured, the integrity of faith is violated, and to souls redeemed by the precious Blood of Christ, pestilence and destruction are brought.
§ 2.
2 And although long ago by the rules concerning the Index of Prohibited Books, made by decree of the same general Council of Trent, it was constituted among other things that bishops should diligently provide that books of this sort of judicial astrology, treatises and indices should not be read 1, which dare to affirm something certain about future contingent outcomes or fortuitous cases or those actions which depend upon human will, yet natural judgments and observations being permitted, which had been written for the sake of aiding navigation, agriculture or the medical art. But all books and writings of geomancy, hydromancy, chiromancy, necromancy, or in which are contained divinations, sorceries, auguries, auspices, incantations of the magical art, they should take care to be utterly rejected and abolished. Yet the eradication of the aforesaid errors, corruptions, crimes and abuses has not been so provided for that even now in some places, and among many, they do not flourish more curiously, since very frequently, when the snares of the devil are detected, all things are found to be full of divinations, divinations by lots and various superstitions in these days.
§ 3.
3 We therefore, who by virtue of our pastoral office must preserve the integrity of the faith inviolate, and provide for the salvation of souls as much as we are able with divine grace assisting, from the depths of paternal charity desire, condemning and disapproving every kind of divination, which, with the devil as author, is accustomed to be done by the aforesaid curious or lost men for the deception of the faithful. Desiring moreover that holy simplicity of Christian religion, especially when it concerns the supreme power, wisdom and providence of God the Creator, to be retained whole and uncorrupted from every stain of error, as is fitting. Wishing also to oppose the aforesaid false credulity and such illicit divinations and detestable study of superstitions and execrable crimes and impurities, so that from the Christian people the Pontiff may rightly be said to order that judicial astrologers, mathematicians, diviners, etc., be severely restrained by ordinaries and also by inquisitors; with this perpetually valid constitution, by apostolic authority, we establish and command that both against astrologers, mathematicians and all others whatsoever exercising henceforth the art of the said judicial astrology, except concerning agriculture, navigation and medicine, or making judgments and nativities of men, by which concerning future contingent outcomes and fortuitous cases, or actions depending upon human will they dare to affirm something will happen, even if they assert or protest that they do not affirm it with certainty, and against others of either sex, who exercise, profess and teach or learn the aforesaid condemned, vain, false and pernicious arts of divining or sciences, or who make such illicit divinations, divinations by lots, superstitions, sorceries, incantations and the aforesaid detestable crimes and crimes, as is set forth, or involve themselves in them in any way whatsoever, of whatever dignity, rank and condition they may be, both bishops and prelates, superiors and other ordinaries of places, and inquisitors of heretical depravity appointed throughout the nations, even if in most of these cases they did not proceed before or were not able to proceed, let them inquire more diligently and proceed, and let them visit upon them more severely canonical penalties and other punishments at their discretion.
§ 4. Prohibiting all and singular books, works and treatises of such arts of judicial astrology, geomancy, hydromancy, pyromancy, onomancy, chiromancy, necromancy, magical art, or in which divinations by lots, sorceries, auguries, auspices, execrable incantations and superstitions are contained, and as mentioned above in the aforesaid Index, forbidden under the censures and penalties contained therein, from being read by any Christian faithful or retained in any way whatsoever, but those should be presented and consigned to the bishops and ordinaries of places or the aforesaid inquisitors. And nevertheless by the same authority we establish and command that against those knowingly reading or retaining books and writings of this sort, or in which such things are contained, the same inquisitors likewise may freely and lawfully proceed and proceed, and may punish and restrain with fitting penalties.
§ 5. Notwithstanding apostolic constitutions and ordinances, and all other things whatsoever to the contrary.
§ 6. But so that these our letters may be brought to the common knowledge of all more quickly in the City, we command that they be affixed or posted on the doors of the basilicas of St. John Lateran and of the Prince of the Apostles in the City, and in the area of the Campus Florae, and those being removed, copies of the same, even printed ones, be left affixed in the same places.
§ 7. And moreover to all and each of our venerable brothers the patriarchs, primates, archbishops, bishops, ordinaries of places and prelates, as well as inquisitors of heretical depravity constituted anywhere, by these present letters we commit, and in virtue of holy obedience strictly commanding we mandate that, by themselves or by another or others, these same present letters, after they shall have received them or shall have had notice of them, in their respective parochial churches, when a multitude of people shall have gathered therein for divine services, and thereafter once in a year, and as often as it shall seem expedient to them, they shall publish or cause to be published in the vernacular language.
