Testo inglese

according to the prescribed distribution of churches and times, with the granting of indulgences.

1 Clement, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to our beloved sons the clergy and people of Rome, greeting and apostolic benediction. The grave and prolonged calamities of Christian commonwealth, which, with sins growing ever more abundant, increase daily, continually move our pastoral solicitude, which we owe to the universal Church, with great sorrow of heart at the present evils and impending dangers; but especially the sorrowful state of the most noble and once most flourishing kingdom of France pierces our heart and paternal affections, which for so many years now is afflicted with the utmost disturbance of affairs and the bitter scourge of all evils. The fires of heresies spread more widely each day, and now, inflamed with equal fury, the enemies of the Holy Church, both heretics on one side and Turks on the other, press close upon our necks, so that it is plainly apparent to all that all human effort is vain, all labors empty and all strength feeble to repel so many misfortunes, unless they are strengthened by the aid of heavenly grace; that we may obtain this, we must necessarily have recourse to that faithful intermediary and interpreter of our desires and conciliator of all good things, prayer, which, sent forth from a humble heart and contrite spirit, penetrates the heavens, mitigates the wrath of God, averts plagues and scourges, and obtains the abundance of divine mercy. For it is, as the holy Fathers call it, the key of heaven; and when prayer ascends, God's mercy descends, and indeed descends so much more easily and abundantly, the greater the multitude of faithful and pious people, joined together in one spirit of charity, who offer continuous prayers.

2 § 1. Wherefore, mindful of the word of the Lord, which is in the Holy Prophet: Call upon me, He says, in the day of tribulation, I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me, we have determined, to appease God, that His wrath may be turned away from His people, and to obtain His aid in these most difficult times, to institute perpetual unceasing public prayer in this beloved City in such manner, that in the patriarchal and distinguished collegiate churches, as well as in the titular and diaconal churches of the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, and in the churches of the Regular clergy and also of confraternities, which shall be separately described, on certain appointed days, the pious and salutary prayer of the Forty Hours shall be celebrated, with the distribution of churches and times observed, so that day and night, at any hour, throughout the whole year turning, without interruption, the incense of prayer may be directed in the sight of the Lord.

3 Institution of prayer as in the rubric.

4 § 2. Wherefore all of you, whom as those who are to pray there with special affection we embrace as beloved sons for this cause, we earnestly exhort in the Lord that in this most salutary and necessary study of prayer, you exercise yourselves piously and diligently. We are all poor; and we have need of God's grace, God is the author and giver of all good things, we can obtain nothing good, avoid nothing evil without Him; ask therefore and you shall receive, knock and it shall be opened to you. Pray for the holy Catholic Church, that, with errors scattered, the truth of one faith may be propagated throughout the whole world. Pray that sinners may return to their senses, and that they may not be swallowed up by the waves of crimes, but may be saved through the plank of penance. Pray for the peace and unity of kings and Christians. Pray for the afflicted kingdom of France, that He Who rules over all kingdoms and to Whose will nothing resists, may restore to the most Christian kingdom, and one most deserving of Christian religion, its ancient piety and former tranquility. Pray that the most terrible enemies of the faith, the Turks, who, inflamed with fury and audacity, cease not to threaten all Christians with servitude and desolation, may be crushed by the right hand of God Almighty Himself. Pray finally for us ourselves, that God may lift up our infirmity, lest we succumb under so great a burden; but grant us to profit in His people by word and example, and to fulfill the work of our ministry, that together with the flock entrusted to us, though unworthy, we may attain to eternal life, through the sprinkling of the blood of the Immaculate Lamb, whom we offer upon the altar, and present to God the Father, that He may look upon the face of His Christ, and spare us sinners, with the intercession also of our most holy Advocate, the Virgin Mother of God Mary, and all the Saints reigning with Christ the Lord.

5 This prayer is begun in the apostolic palace on the first Sunday of sacred Advent.

6 Indulgences for those praying.

Title of the Bull.

7 § 3. This same pious prayer we ourselves shall first begin in our apostolic palace on the first Sunday of sacred Advent after the solemnities of the Masses, with our venerable Brothers the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church and, who are in the City, the bishops and prelates, so that thereafter in due order in the other churches of the City it may be celebrated according to the prescribed form, and the salutary custom of praying without interruption may be properly and devoutly introduced.

8 § 1. Moreover, that you may persevere all the more readily in this pious undertaking, trusting in the mercy of almighty God and the authority of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul, to all and each of the Christian faithful of either sex, truly penitent and confessed, and refreshed with the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, who in whatsoever church where such prayer shall have been directed, persevering devoutly in prayer for at least one hour, we grant and bestow full remission of their sins; but to those who shall have poured forth pious prayers to God there in a shorter space of time, we mercifully remit in the Lord seven years and as many quarantines of the penances enjoined upon them or otherwise due.
