ACQUAVIVA, Diocese of. - In the Roman synod of 465 and in those following down to 502 there appear respectively two bishops, Paul and Benignus, with the title of A.
F. Ughelli wrote, in the 17th century, that some at that time placed that episcopal see in Campania, others instead in Apulia and still others in Roman Etruria. Ughelli subscribed to the opinion of the latter, while in times closer to our own T. Mommsen could not decide between Etruria and Apulia. L. Duchesne holds for Etruria, but remains with some uncertainty, while De Vit does not hesitate to embrace Ughelli's opinion, as F. Lanzoni has done recently, whereas J. Fraikin still sided with Apulia.
A. in Etruria was a "mutatio" (station) of the Via Flaminia, not far from Civita Castellana, to the east of Soratte. Its ecclesiastical territory must have extended along the consular road, in the direction of the diocese of Rome. It is probable that the ancient Christian cemeteries of Rignano and Morlupo, in the region of the Capenates, belonged to the diocese of A., which disappeared after 502. Its territory was probably annexed to the diocese of Porto.
