ADRIAN III, Pope, Saint. - A Roman, son of Benedict, he was pope from 884 to 885, succeeding Marinus. We have neither his biography in the Liber Pontificalis nor any letter of his. The information is very scanty and uncertain.
Departing from the line of conduct of his predecessor Marinus, he returned, in regard to Photius, to the conciliatory attitude of John VIII, notifying him of his election. He had to repress seditious movements in the city of Rome energetically. Martin of Opava, a chronicler of the 13th century, attributes two decrees to this pope: by the first he would have abolished imperial interference in the election of the popes; by the second he would have established that if Charles the Fat were to die without offspring, the imperial crown was to be assumed by an Italian prince; but they do not deserve credence. Charles the Fat, however, who at the death of Carloman had received his inheritance, reuniting in his hands the whole of Charlemagne's ancient empire, invited the pope to the diet of Worms to decide on the succession. A. entrusted the government of the city to the imperial envoy John, bishop of Pavia, and set out. He died on the journey at Vilzicara (S. Cesario near Spilamberto), a court of the abbey of Nonantola (August 885), where he was buried. There he was honored as a saint and the cult was confirmed by Leo XIII on 10 June 1891.
