Albergati, Antonio

ALBERGATI, ANTONIO. - Born in Bologna on 16 Sept. 1566, died on 4 Jan. 1634. He was vicar general and archdeacon in Milan (1602-1607), referendary of the Signatura, governor of Todi and then apostolic nuncio in Cologne (1610-20). He worked actively at the diets (1612 and 1619)

for the union of the Catholic princes and for the conversion of the Protestants. He had also been preconized and created bishop of Bisceglie (1609). He energetically defended ecclesiastical immunity during the nunciature of Lisbon. Around 1622 he was auxiliary of Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi in Bologna, where he remained until the latter's death (1632). His tomb is in Rome, in the church of S. Maria della Scala. He wrote ascetical and legal works.
