ALBERGATI, ANTONIO. – Born in Bologna on 16 Sept. 1566, died on 4 Jan. 1634. He served as vicar general and archdeacon in Milan (1602–1607), referendary of the Segnatura, governor of Todi, and subsequently apostolic delegate to Cologne (1610–20). He worked actively in the diets (1612 and 1619) for the union of Catholic princes and for the conversion of Protestants. He had been preconized and created Bishop of Bisceglie (1609). He vigorously defended ecclesiastical immunity during his nunciature in Lisbon. Around 1622 he became auxiliary to Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi in Bologna, where he remained until the cardinal’s death (1632). His tomb is in Rome, in the church of S. Maria della Scala. He wrote ascetical and juridical works.
ALBERGATI, Fabio Sanità. – A lay moralist, born in Bologna of noble family, he was castellan of Perugia; died on 8 Aug. 1606. He displayed his profound learning in various publications of a moral character. Noteworthy are: Del modo di ridurre alla pace le inimicizie private; Del cardinale and Dei discorsi politici, in 5 books, in which the author upholds the political doctrine of Aristotle against that of Jean Bodin; the latter were published after his death.
