ALFANI DOMENICO - Virgin with Child and Saints - Perugia, Pinacoteca.
ALFANI, DOMENICO AND ORAZIO. - Painters. DOMENICO, b. in Perugia ca. 1480, d. after 1553, collaborator and friend of Raphael, painted after the master's design the Eternal Father on the cymatium of Raphael's Deposition, today in the Borghese Gallery in Rome, and a Holy Family in the gallery of Perugia. Raphaelesque influences are likewise evident in the Madonna of 1518 in the gallery of Perugia and in those of the cathedral of Città della Pieve (1521), while the great altarpiece in the Pinacoteca of Perugia, dated 1534, representing the Virgin with the Child and Saints, which is his best-known work, reveals the influence of Giulio Romano and Fra Bartolomeo. A mediocre and cold painter, in his last work he ended up feebly repeating the hackneyed formulas of the Michelangelesque painters.
ORAZIO, son of Domenico, b. in Perugia ca. 1510, d. in Rome in 1583. A collaborator of his father, he worked from 1539 to 1544 in Sicily. Among the works executed after his return to Perugia we recall the Legend of Sts. Peter and Paul and the Resurrection for the church of the Benedictines. The style of his paintings, of a qualitative level even inferior to that of his father, is linked to the Florentine Mannerists.
