ALLIOLI, JOSEPH-FRANZ von. - Biblical scholar, b. 10 Aug. 1793 at Sulzbach (Bavaria), d. 22 May 1873 at Augusta (Augsburg). In 1816 he became a priest at Ratisbona and doctor of theology at Landshut. After two years of pastoral ministry, he devoted himself to biblical and Oriental studies at Vienna, Rome, and Paris. In 1821 he began teaching at the University of Landshut, and in 1824 became full professor there of Oriental languages, exegesis, and biblical archaeology. From 1826 he moved with the university to Munich, where in 1830 he became a member of the Academy and rector. A persistent sore throat compelled him to abandon teaching in 1835. He was then appointed canon, and in 1838 provost of the cathedral of Augusta. From 1850 to 1853 he was a deputy in the Bavarian Landtag.
He published a highly regarded German translation of the Bible (in 6 vols., 1830–37), which went through very many editions. In 1844, in collaboration with Grätz and Haneberg, he published a manual of biblical archaeology (Handbuch der biblischen Altertumskunde), in 2 vols.
